Are Implant Supported Dentures Better Than Traditional Dentures?

Implant supported dentures are a tooth replacement option for someone with multiple missing teeth. This hybrid method of tooth replacement has grown in popularity because of the many benefits that come along with it. However, implant supported dentures are not for everyone, which is why it is good to be familiar with other tooth replacement options, such as traditional dentures.

Implant supported dentures

Implant supported dentures are a hybrid option for replacing missing teeth. They combine dental implants with partial dentures to create an appliance that is secured in place. Dentists often recommend implant supported dentures for patients who have an entire arch of teeth missing. Multiple dental implants can be placed throughout the arch, which allows for security when attaching the dentures.

Want to know why implant supported-dentures are better? Outlined below are the main benefits, which cannot be found in any other tooth replacement option, traditional dentures included.

  • Implant supported dentures rely on dental implants, which helps stimulate bone growth
  • Dentures that are secured by implants do not slide around
  • Because implant supported dentures are secured in place, they look more natural than traditional ones
  • There is less of a risk of damage or injury because the dentures are secured in place by implants

While implant supported dentures do have more benefits than traditional ones, the process does take much longer. Patients who undergo traditional dentures only have to wait a few weeks for their appliances to be made. However, when implant supported dentures are chosen, the patient has to undergo a surgical procedure in which the dental implants are placed. After a few months of osseointegration, the patient returns to their dentist in order to be fitted for dentures, but even then, the patient has to wait for the dental lab to custom-create the dentures.

Additionally, not everyone is a candidate for implant supported dentures. Patients are required to have a strong jawbone with enough bone density to support the implants. If there is not enough bone present, a graft may be required. In rare cases, traditional dentures may be a better option.

Traditional dentures

The most common type of dentures is the traditional ones. Traditional dentures are offered in either full or partial pieces, depending on the patient's needs. If the patient has an entire arch of teeth missing, the dentist will likely recommend full dentures. However, if there are only a few teeth missing in one arch, a partial will be recommended.

The main difference between traditional dentures and implant-supported ones is that traditional ones do not rely on dental implants to support them. Instead, they rest right on the teeth and are held in place by the gums and lips. Patients who wear traditional dentures sometimes report difficulty eating, speaking or smiling with traditional dentures because they are not anchored in place. However, with time and practice, they are easily wearable and comfortable.
