3 Examples of Gum Surgery for Treating Periodontal Disease

Gum Graft Oakland, CA

Gum surgery is an advanced therapy for more serious cases of gum disease. Continue reading to learn more about the different types of gum surgery. There are three forms of periodontal surgery, all of which involve many complex procedures. A dentist will evaluate the patient's condition first and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

3 Types of gum surgery

The following are the different examples of gum surgery and what is involved in each procedure:

1. Gingival flap surgery

This type of gum surgery is often called gum lift surgery. The gums are recontoured during gum lift surgery to enhance the look of the smile. It comprises gingivoplasty and gingivectomy procedures. Dentists often use the terms interchangeably since they are essentially the same surgery with distinct goals.

Gingivoplasty is a procedure that reshapes the gum tissue to remove the unhealthy soft tissue from the gum pocket's wall. On the other hand, gingivectomy is a procedure used to recontour gingiva that has lost its typical shape. It entails removing the full area of the gum tissue, not only the diseased tissue. This operation is often used to fix a gummy smile, remove extra tissue from swollen gums (gum hyperplasia), or lengthen the crown of a tooth needing restoration.

2. Mucogingival surgery

Mucogingival surgery is a complex form of periodontal surgery. Dentists commonly use this form of surgery to treat severe gum disease, especially when denuded root surfaces need to be covered and protected. This surgery is also recommended for patients with removable dentures, primarily to widen the oral vestibule (the gap between the lips/cheeks).

The frenum is a thin band of tissue that runs between the lips and cheeks. An example is the maxillary labial frenum, located behind the top lip, above the junction of the two upper central incisors. By increasing the depth of the oral vestibule, the dentist can increase the stability of the removable denture. Frena relocation stops the prosthesis from dislodging.

Mucogingival therapy is subdivided into several procedures, including the free gingival graft, apically moved flap, laterally-repositioned flap, replacement flap, and frenum relocation.

3. Osseous surgery

Finally, osseous surgery, like mucogingival surgery, is a kind of advanced periodontal disease therapy that addresses the damage resulting from periodontal gum disease. It includes the treatment of bone tissue, notably reshaping or restoring its natural shape. The procedure relies on the concept that periodontal gum disease will be resolved if the bone and gums have the same shape.

Bone reshaping or resectioning and bone stimulative procedures are two subcategories of osseous surgery. Osteotomy and ostectomy are two bone contouring operations that repair bone abnormalities and restore normal bone shapes. Osteotomy reshapes the bone without removing it. Ostectomy, however, necessitates the removal of a part of the bone.

Bone grafts and implantation operations are among the methods used to stimulate bone growth. They aid in the body's natural healing process, which aids in the repair of bone deformities. They also restore the natural condition of the bone.
